DIPLOMA THESIS
Energy Inspection of Apartment Complexes
Dimitrios L. Eftaxias
The subject of the thesis is the energy audit for a complex of apartment buildings in the Livadia area of the Boeotia prefecture and the presentation of proposals aimed at green development.
Improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a major issue that concerns the entire European Community. One of the areas with great potential for action in this direction is the building sector, which, according to studies, accounts for 40% of total energy consumption at both European and national level.
In our country, the building sector, compared to other European countries, is plagued by problems due to the absence of basic measures in most buildings, especially those built before 1979, when the first thermal insulation regulation was implemented. In an effort to reverse this situation, the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulation (EPB) was issued in 2010, defining the official energy inspection process in Greece.
The aim of this thesis is, initially, to examine the energy requirements and consumption of an existing apartment complex and, then to analyze different energy-saving interventions, as well as combinations thereof, mainly in the areas of heating and hot water. A multi-apartment complex consisting of four four-story apartment buildings and a total of 40 apartments in Livadia, built in 2002, was selected as a case study. As this is not an old, uninsulated building, it is interesting to record the contribution of each intervention or combination and ultimately propose the intervention or combination that achieves the best levels of energy savings and amortization of the initial investment cost.
